VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET Each year the town's Victorian Northumberland Square is transformed into a winter market, over the second weekend in December. The 2006 market took place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December and was the eighth event of its type. Visitors came from all over the region to make this one of the best attended ever. Jolly stallholders sold traditional foodstuffs, crafts and gifts whilst seasonal music and the smell of mulled wine drifted over the square in the still winter air. Many of the stallholders were dressed in period costume and the scene was completed by members of the local Chamber of Trade in their Victorian finery mingling with the shoppers. The weekend began with a short community carol service around the bandstand at 10 o'clock on the Saturday. Photographs of the day will soon be added to this page. |
