PROGRESS OVER TOWN CENTRE IMPROVEMENTS We are pleased to report that new lighting columns have been installed in Railway Street, free parking has been resumed in Stephenson Street and that discussions are ongoing with local Councillors and Council officers regarding further improvements to the town centre, such as pedestrianisation of the lower end of Bedford Street and new street furniture. _____________________________________________ IS NORTH SHIELDS BEING ALLOWED TO DIE? Over the last few years North Shields has suffered through the increase in out of town shopping centres and a general lack of investment by its key stakeholders. Businesses have closed or relocated out of the town centre leaving derelict shops, some of which are taken over by charity shops, takeaways and amusement arcades, and others left to fall into disrepair. It is time for a new vision for North Shields town centre and for North Tyneside Council to take an active role in the regeneration of a once thriving business community.
