Chamber launch North Shields History Exhibition

Chamber Set to Make History

Over 70 guests including Mayor Linda Arkley attended the preview event of the ‘Gannin Shoppin in Shields’ history exhibition at Queen Alexandra 6th Form College on the 24th of May.

The exhibition designed to be fully portable presents a history of retailing in North Shields through photographs and individual memories displayed in a number of banners telling the story of retailing in North Shields through the decades.

The exhibition was initiated and co ordinated by the North Shields Chamber of Trade working with the Remembering the Past, Resourcing the Future Project, North Tyneside Council and students from Queen Alexandra 6th Form College.

Opening the exhibition on behalf of the Chamber David Bavaird thanked all who had contributed for their memories, creativity and time and for making the exhibition possible. David concluded ‘The exhibition working with representatives from both the private and public sectors with an age group which spans all of the generations is a further example of what can be achieved in the town by us all working together and will bring to life an important part of the history of our town centre as we start to write the next chapter with the planned developments which will make North Shields an attractive town centre for residents and visitors alike.’

The exhibition will be on display at the Beacon Centre between the 6th and 12th of June before starting its journey around businesses, schools and charitable organisations across the region
